Financial Aid & Scholarships

It’s that time of year again to start filling out financial aid paperwork. Here are some funding options you may not have considered.

Middle Class Scholarship

California’s new Middle Class Scholarship supports California students whose annual parent income—between $100,000 and $150,000—disqualifies them for a Cal Grant.

Students can save 10-40 percent on tuition and fees, depending on their family income. The amount awarded also varies by student and institution.

For example, a family earning up to $100,000 a year can receive a maximum 14 percent scholarship in 2014-2015, up to 20 percent in 2015-2016 and up to 30 percent in 2016-2017.

“The amount is determined after the award of any federal Pell Grant, Cal Grant and institutional needs-based grants for which a given student is eligible,” says HSU Financial Aid chief Peggy Metzger. “Also, the final award amount will hinge on the number of students eligible statewide and on the funding allocated by the state budget.”

To apply, file the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) by the priority deadline Mar. 2.

STARS

There are nearly 200 scholarships available to HSU students on STARS, the online scholarship tracking and review system. Metzger encourages all students to log into MyHumboldt and take a look.

In STARS, students answer academic and demographic questions like family status, G.P.A., intended major and credits completed. The system then matches them with scholarships based on their responses. While some scholarships require just the click of a mouse to apply, others ask for supplemental materials such as essays, video auditions and letters of recommendation. STARS streamlines the process by allowing students to upload all of their supporting documents online.

If your student has questions, there’s help. Financial Aid counselors take walk-ins Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Student & Business Services Building. For more information, call (707) 826-4321, or email finaid@humboldt.edu.
