Community Connections

Connecting with the local community is an important part of the HSU experience. It can be intimidating at first. But through collaborations with the University and community, students can find a wealth of entertainment, job and volunteer opportunities, service learning and hands-on experiences.

For fun: HSU Downtown is a series of events that gets students out into the community for free dance parties, newly released movies at theaters, and more. Last year, HSU and the community collaborated to throw the first ever Block Party on the Arcata Plaza, featuring music, raffles, and a barbecue. See the Forever Humboldt website and HSU Events Calendar for upcoming events.

Students can find outdoor adventures and a variety of other activities through Center Activities. Options include surfing, hiking, paddling Humboldt Bay, and much more. See them all at the Center Activities website.

For the future: Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with the community. The Y.E.S. program has been a hub of service programs for 50 years, and gives students experience, leadership skills, and a strong sense of community. Watch a video about the Y.E.S. programs.

The Center for Community Based Learning is a great tool for students to find service-learning and internship opportunities. The Center coordinates hundreds of approved community learning sites, where students gave valuable experience in their fields--and a leg up when they’re starting their careers. Visit the CCBL website for resources.

Encourage your student to explore the community, attend events, seek internships, and other learning opportunities. They belong here, and HSU wants to make sure they know it!

HSU's New President, Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr.

HSU’s Next President

Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr. has been named Humboldt State’s eighth President and becomes the first African American to serve in that role. He will join the campus in his new capacity in July. Jackson succeeds Lisa Rossbacher, who will be retiring at the end of June 2019 after serving as HSU president since 2014.

Dr. Jackson has been president of Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota since 2014. He has held other leadership roles within higher education including vice president for student affairs at both the University of Louisville and Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

“I welcome the opportunity to work with HSU’s talented faculty and staff, alongside community members, to ensure that those life-altering opportunities are expanded for current and future students,” Dr. Jackson says.

Giving Opportunity

HSU Student Success Scholarship

Giving to scholarships provides you the opportunity to directly impact a student’s life.

As the cost of public education continues to rise, more than two-thirds of our students must rely on financial aid, but donors like you can help! Scholarships are vital to making a Humboldt State education accessible to all qualified students; and provide ongoing support to returning students. In addition to lessening a student’s financial burden, scholarships and awards are a great way for you to recognize a student’s commitment to academics and excellence in leadership.

Your gift to the HSU Student Success Scholarship will be combined with other donors’ gifts to help provide as many scholarships as possible. This means a gift of $50 could fill a gap in funding and help keep a student in school. A gift of $1,000 could fund an entire scholarship!

Since the Student Success Scholarship was established in fall of 2015 more than $60,000 in scholarships has been awarded to dozens of HSU students! The money we raise each year is what is distributed to HSU students. Make your gift today!
