Planning Ahead and Staying Safe
Keeping your student safe is a priority at Humboldt State. Like anywhere, there’s potential on the North Coast for unique natural disasters and other safety issues, and University staff regularly trains and prepares for emergency situations.

The HSU Risk Management office regularly develops and updates emergency procedures for a variety of hazards, from flu pandemics to shootings. While wildfires aren’t a high risk, given Humboldt County’s cool coastal climate, the University has taken note of the lessons from recent fire tragedies around the state. Humboldt County definitely is earthquake country, so it’s important for students to be involved in the preparation and response to emergencies.
Remind them the first thing to do if an earthquake happens is to Drop, Cover, and Hold On. They should know evacuation routes and gathering points for the buildings and rooms they spend a lot of time in. The HSU campus is well out of the tsunami zone, but if students are in low-lying areas in the event of a large quake, they should immediately head to higher ground. Students should also know about water safety and road safety, and what to do in case of wild animal encounters, severe storms, and outages.
Students can apply to join our Campus Emergency Response Team, a volunteer crew that responds to campus emergencies to assist first responders. Team members undergo regular trainings and exercises.
