Spring Registration Begins Soon: This Tool Will Help

As your student prepares to register for the Spring 2019 semester, it’s a good time to make sure they’re taking advantage of their Degree Planner, a new online tool that allows students to create a detailed four-year plan, helping them stay on track for timely graduation.

Students can drag and drop classes into a four-year plan. The tool identifies basic problems with a student’s plan as well. It flags a class if a student hasn’t taken the prerequisite, and will note if a department doesn’t typically offer a certain class during the semester a student chooses it. This allows students to move classes around until they have a plan that works.

Students can make many four year plans and adjust them constantly through their education. They can look at what could happen if they change a major, add summer abroad programs, and more.

University Registrar Clint Rebik says departments are utilizing the data generated by the students to directly plan seats and course offerings.

“One of the challenges with planning courses is trying to get a sense of how many students need a particular course in a given semester,” he says. “Once we have 100 percent of students using the Degree Planner, a department can anticipate adding additional seats to meet student demand, eliminating a possible block to graduation.”

Over 75 percent of students have planned at least one semester beyond their current term, while over 50 percent of students have planned out three or more terms.

The numbers are encouraging, Rebik says, and the sooner all students use the tool, the better course offerings will meet student demand.

“By using the planner to plan three or more terms, students really do have the power to direct University resources to the classes they need.”

HSU President to Retire

HSU President Lisa A. Rossbacher has announced her plan to retire from the University at the end of the school year in June. Rossbacher, who has served as the President since 2014, said it wasn’t an easy decision.

“I am inspired each day by our amazing students and by the commitment of our faculty and staff,” she wrote.

During Rossbacher’s presidency, HSU achieved record high graduation rates, the University’s accreditation was reaffirmed for an eight-year period, a sustainable budget plan was developed, investments in tenure-line faculty were made, and much more.

The CSU will soon launch a national search for President Rossbacher’s successor. A committee made up of various campus stakeholders will seek campus and community input.
