Thinking About Graduation

Home for the Holiday

Whether your student just reached the halfway point of Freshman year or is heading into the home stretch, graduation should always be kept in mind.

We checked in with HSU’s Registrar, who maintains records as students progress toward graduation, for a breakdown of steps students can take to make sure they stay on track to graduate.

Freshman Year

Professors tell us all the time about students who struggle to finish an introductory English course they should've taken their freshman year. Urge your student to focus on getting these classes done so they can focus on major courses later.

Sophomore Year

Students should get to know as many professors as possible as they take GE classes and are exposed to different disciplines and majors. These professors might be good resources and help your student pick a major.

Junior Year

By now your student should have some major courses under his or her belt, which means it’s time to apply for graduation. Applying will start the process of the degree audit. Evaluators on campus will comb through your student's records and determine which classes remain to be completed. They will also approve the major plan your student developed with his or her advisor. Applying for graduation is required to participate in Commencement ceremonies.

Senior Year

Followed all the steps so far? Now is the time to register for commencement! This year, HSU's Commencement Ceremonies take place on Saturday, May 13 in Redwood Bowl, rain or shine. Get all the info you need at humboldt.edu/commencement.

Transcripts and Diplomas

Unofficial and official transcripts can be ordered any time at the Registrar's Office website for a small fee. They can even be mailed overnight to other schools or potential employers.

Diplomas are mailed to student's permanent addresses and take six to eight weeks to arrive. More information
