Getting Home for the Holidays

Home for the Holiday

With Winter Break just around the corner, many students are planning for road trips that will take them halfway—or more—across the state. HSU makes it easy to connect with other students who are traveling with Zimride and the ride sharing board in the Jolly Giant Commons.

Zimride is an online ridesharing service that connects drivers and passengers for local or long distance trips. The system is secure because only HSU students, faculty, and staff can sign in to the HSU Zimride network using their HSU user ID or Facebook account at zimride.com/humboldtstate. Users can post testimonials of other riders and even look for mutual friends by connecting to their Facebook profiles.

Once a user is logged into Zimride, they are asked to enter their start and end points, their anticipated dates of travel, and whether they are a driver or passenger. Zimride also asks users to specify how much they are willing to contribute for fuel and other costs associated with the trip.

Zimride replaced the informal ride-share boards, where dropouts and poor communication were common problems.

HSU has a long-standing commitment to sustainability and alternative transportation. Other alternative transportation programs include Zipcar and the JackPass program, which offers free bus rides to students.

Easier-to-Use Housing & Residence Life Website

HSU recently debuted an updated Housing website that’s more user-friendly than ever before. Users can easily compare housing options, get quotes on housing costs, and check out resident-only events. Check it out at housing.humboldt.edu.

Prep for Finals with Annual Pancake Dinner

HSU’s annual Pancake Dinner is Dec. 12 in the J Cafeteria from 8 to 10 p.m. This free event lets students grab a meal as their favorite professors and staff members serve up pancakes and all the fixings. Last year, more than 800 students took part in this fun event.
