Earlier Date for Financial Aid Application

The federal government is trying to help more students and their families apply for financial aid with a new earlier application timeline. This year, students will be able to file a 2017-18 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as early as Oct. 1, 2016 rather than beginning on Jan. 1, 2017.

Another change: Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA, students will be required to report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017–18 FAFSA, students and parents will report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information.

The change brings the financial aid application process in line with the timeline for applying to colleges. The change also allows students and parents to report accurate financial information, unlike the previous deadline that required applicants to report estimated incomes as they waited for tax documents to arrive in the mail. This could often lead to hang-ups in the application process, as estimates were more likely to lead to additional screening.

The change also lets students and families take advantage of the IRS’s Data Retrieval Tool, which automatically transfers tax data directly into their FAFSA from IRS databases.

HSU’s Financial Aid counselors are available Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 p.m., to help your students apply and manage their financial aid. Counselors can also be reached at (866) 255-1390.

Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge

The Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge is about campus communities joining forces with students to get people outside and active. Humboldt State will be one of 90 colleges and universities across the United States participating in the 2016 Challenge, which runs September 4 through October 15.

The school to log the most outdoor activity will be hailed “National Outdoor Champion” and receive a gear bank worth $3,000 from North Face.

HSU, located in some of the most pristine natural environments anywhere, is eager to get students, parents, and alumni to take part. The competition is open to everyone and anyone, and you can participate from anywhere.

All participants will be entered into a pool for daily and weekly prizes from REI, North Face, Chaco, Osprey, and more.

All you need to participate is to download the Outdoor Nation app (available for iPhone or Android) or register on the website. When you head outdoors, open the app and follow the instructions.
