Many students come to Humboldt State because of its emphasis on environmental sustainability. And the University certainly takes a broad approach to sustainability by weaving an eco-consciousness into the curriculum, student activities, and campus operations. If your student is interested in environmental sustainability, let them know there are several ways to get involved. You student can join a variety of campus organizations, work in the local community, or learn more through specific academic programs.
"Humboldt State has a wealth of opportunities for students to get involved with sustainability,” says Morgan King, a coordinator in HSU’s Office of Sustainability. “Students can learn about environmental policy and management in their majors, or get hands on by joining the Waste Reduction and Resource Awareness Program and help campus lighten its environmental impact. And that's just one way; there are environmentally-focused clubs, the Humboldt Energy Independence Fund, and much more.”
HSU has several University-affiliated student committees and programs, including the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology, an eco-demonstration house that employs three full-time student directors every semester. Students can also help improve campus by developing energy-saving projects in the Humboldt Energy Independence Fund. Every year, student help grow the fund, which supports student-designed energy projects. Past projects have included installing energy-saving lights in Redwood Bowl and adding solar panels to the top of the Music Building. The Waste Reduction and Resources Awareness Program helps minimize HSU’s environmental impact by hosting zero-waste events, managing campus composting programs, and more.
Academic and special interest clubs range from the Student Food Collective to the Natural Resources Club. A full list of environmentally focused clubs is available here.
Within the academic curriculum, sustainability principles can be explored at the undergraduate level with programs like the Environmental Management & Protection major, Rangeland Sciences, and Oceanography. Sustainability topics are also found in unsuspected majors like the Native American Studies’ focus on Natural Resources and the Environment, or the Environmental Toxicology option in the Chemistry major.
Students seeking a broad understanding of sustainability topics can survey the topic from many angles with lower division and upper division general education courses with an eco focus.
Beyond campus, the North Coast community is committed to sustainability in a big way. If your student is looking for volunteer or internship opportunities, he or she should check out ways to get involved locally.
