HSU Helps Re-Imagine Freshman Experience
HSU has joined a select group of colleges with the goal of enhancing the first-year experience for incoming students. Along with 43 partner universities, HSU will share its best practices to make sure students are prepared and thrive in the college environment. The Re-Imagining the First Year is sponsored by the Association of American State Colleges and Universities and is funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and USA Funds.
“Through our association with this effort, we will work to coalesce evidence-based activities and interventions into a package that will better serve all of our first-year students,” says HSU Provost Alex Enyedi. “This will enhance academic success by ensuring students are well prepared and motivated for their second year of college and that they remain on-track to graduate with their degree.”
HSU is committed to the success of all its students and has taken strides to boost academic performance and retention among its new students.
Already in place at HSU are innovative programs like the Klamath Connection, a learning community that takes a group of over 70 students interested in science majors and guides them through a series of courses and field experiences centering on Northern California’s Klamath River.
In HSU’s Retention through Academic Mentoring Program (RAMP) freshmen are mentored by experienced and trained classmates who help them achieve educational goals. RAMP is always recruiting student counselors, so if your student is interested in helping others, encourage them to apply. More information can be found online at humboldt.edu/ramp/contact.

Planning Next Year’s Housing
The spring semester just got underway, but it’s never too early to be thinking about where your student will live next fall. Whether it’s on campus or off, HSU has resources to help students find the living space that’s right for them.
Save the date: On March 3, 2016, online Application for Returners 2016-17 will be available. Students interested in returning to the residence halls can complete the housing application online at myhousing.humboldt.edu. HSU has limited availability for housing for returning students.
