New Year’s Resolutions for a Great School Year

The new year is a great time to set goals for the next 12 months. We spoke with John Johnson, coordinator of the African American Center for Academic Excellence, about what elements should be included in a student's successful new year's resolutions. Johnson encourages students to get an early start on their goals and urges them to take advantage of the resources on campus. "There are so many ways to get involved, whether it's academically or with extracurricular activities." With that, here are four great new year’s resolutions for the student in your life.

Attend a Guest Lecture in a Different Major/Discipline
Sure, there’s plenty of chances to attend lectures and workshops in your student’s own academic department, but why not try something new? HSU hosts lectures and workshops every week, often featuring prominent, award-winning experts. With the Chung-Watson Lecture Series (School of Business), the Biological Seminar Series (Dept. of Biological Sciences), the Sustainable Futures Speaker Series (Environment & Community Graduate Program), and plenty more, there’s no shortage of free lectures to expand your student's knowledge. Check out HSU’s events calendar for the latest dates and times.

Join the Gym, or an Intramural or Recreational Sports Team
All HSU students have access to the gym in the Student Recreation & Wellness Center, so encourage your student to make an effort to spend 30 minutes there, three times a week. They’ll love the results. If weightlifting and cardio classes aren’t their thing, encourage your student to explore the sports teams on campus. HSU offers both intramural sports and recreation club sports at varying levels of competition. Offerings include soccer, baseball, archery, and many more. Visit the HSU Recreational Sports website for more information.

Check out one of HSU’s 180+ Clubs
Students are passionate about a great many things, and nowhere is that more evident than in HSU’s diversity of club offerings. With everything from honor societies and Greek fraternities, to clubs focused on history, animation, video games, and beyond, there’s something for your student to get involved with. Encourage your student to check out the website or attend a clubs fair, held every semester on the quad. They might find a new hobby or even a lifelong passion. More information is at humboldt.edu/clubs.

Explore a Student Leadership Role
Students do best when they’re engaged with campus, and seeking a leadership role is a great way become involved. Encourage your student to explore Humboldt State’s program for Student Engage and Leadership Support (SEALS). Students enhance their critical thinking skills, connect with peers, and make an impact in their community when they get involved outside of the classroom. To learn more about the many ways to engage with campus, encourage your student to visit humboldt.edu/seals.
