Dear Lumberjacks,
It’s my first official week at Cal Poly Humboldt as your acting president, and I'm excited to be on campus!
A little bit about me: I’ve been an educator for most of my career, including teaching middle and high school students with special needs. From that experience, I know education can provide the intellectual and personal spark to inspire students to pursue their dreams while uplifting others.
I also believe knowledge goes both ways. Part of my commitment to you is supporting your success. Throughout the semester, I’ll be focused on learning about the important work you’re doing, whether that’s volunteering your time, conducting research, or expanding hands-on learning experiences. Among my priorities is listening. Your experiences are valuable to us all and I want to hear what’s on your mind and in your hearts.
While our perspectives are unique, there is a common denominator we all share: a long-standing commitment to having our voices heard—an ethos echoed on campuses across the nation. You should speak out about the issues you care about because free speech is a fundamental right that’s critical for a healthy society.
To that end, The California State University has established a new, interim systemwide “Time, Place, and Manner” (TPM) policy relating to freedom of expression on campus. The new TPM policy applies to all 23 campuses and outlines standards as to when, where, and how activities may be conducted on university property. The TPM policy is in place to support your right to express your views freely without disrupting university operations or infringing on the rights of others.
I’ll be on campus as much as possible, engaging with members of the campus community while exploring this beautiful place and—hopefully—getting used to the hills and stairs! So, if you see me, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself. I’ll also be at College Colors Day, where I’ll say a few words. Please drop by, say hi, and enjoy some great food and games.
To be acting president of the first polytechnic university in Northern California is an honor. To lead this unique campus community is a privilege. And I look forward to strengthening this premier university together.
With very best wishes,
Michael E. Spagna
