Campus Weathers the Power Shutdowns

HSU President Jackson with students in the Jolly Giant Commons

The campus community rallied to make sure students were safe, fed, warm, and comfortable last month as widespread power shutdowns impacted the state.

Classes and campus events were canceled on October 9–10 and 28–30 due to county-wide PG&E power shutdowns.

In response to the shutdowns, HSU activated its Emergency Operations Center to handle the campus response, including services for students, oversight of facilities, public safety, communications, and more.

Dining Services provided meals for students and Housing provided movies and other entertainment during the blackout, as well as extra blankets and charging stations.

Counseling was available and there were accommodations for off-campus students who preferred to stay on campus during the shutdowns.

Thousands of members of the campus community enjoyed free meals at the J during the shutdowns.

Remember, in times of emergency, humboldt.edu is the best source for updates and campus communications. You can also call 707.826.INFO.

HSU also offers the Rave Guardian app, available for Apple and Android smartphones, which allows students to stay in constant contact with a list of trusted contacts and make immediate contact with University Police, including to send anonymous tips. We encourage all students to download the app. More information can be found at humboldt.edu/police/rave-guardian-app.

Fall Break

Fall Break is from November 25–29, and it's not too early to start planning for transportation.

For more information about traveling to HSU, including driving directions and transit availability, visit Travel to HSU.

To learn more about rideshares and campus car rentals see our parking website section about Alternate Transportation.

Weather can be unpredictable during this time of year, so please be sure to check road conditions and weather reports before you or your student travels.

Winter Wishes

Forever Humboldt is honored to once again organize and sponsor Winter Wishes, a program that helps staff, faculty, students, and local alumni sponsors buy gifts for over 125 local children in need.

Students can get involved by helping shop for gifts and wrapping them at one of our gift-wrapping parties: Monday, December 9, 4-7 p.m. or Thursday, December 12, 12-3 p.m. in Nelson Hall East 106. It's a wonderful way for them to help support the local community.
