Homecoming & Family Weekend

Good Times at the Pregame – Being Axe Major for the world famous Marching Lumberjacks is a full-time job—especially during Homecoming & Family Weekend. But at Homecoming 2010, our fearless bandleader (right), brought both family and fun to the table.

Join the Fun at Homecoming & Family
Weekend – Sep. 30-Oct. 1

Desiree Perez

Fall semester started off with a bang with this year’s two-week long Welcome Home to Humboldt activities for students. Now parents and family get their turn to join in the fun with Homecoming & Family Weekend.

This year, Homecoming & Family Weekend is Sep. 30 and Oct. 1, so if you haven’t already registered, now’s the time. Whether your student was home for the summer or off on a different adventure, Homecoming & Family Weekend is the perfect time to drop in and reconnect. Your student will appreciate a chance to spend time with you (and let someone else pick up the dinner tab), and you’ll have an opportunity to take in all Humboldt has to offer.

“It’s all about bringing our HSU community together to have a great time. I think we’ve got a lot to offer.”

“We really worked to make this an event for the whole family,” says Randi Darnall Burke, Dean of Students. “There are events and activities for everyone from our Golden Grads, who graduated in 1961 or earlier, to grandkids. It’s all about bringing our HSU community together to have a great time. I think we’ve got a lot to offer.”

Here’s a quick list of events that you and your student can check out while you’re in town.

Friday, September 30

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Campus Tours

Haven’t explored HSU before? Take a two-hour tour of campus and get to know your student’s home away from home. Tours leave every two hours. And they’re free.

4 p.m. Taste of Humboldt Welcome

Humboldt is home to some great specialty foods, so have a taste on us. Get free samples of what our local eateries have to offer—and pick up some gift certificate ideas for your student’s next care package.

7 p.m. Women’s Volleyball vs. UC San Diego

Maybe football’s not your game, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some competitive sports while you’re here. Check out our women’s volleyball team as they take on UCSD for just $5. You can also catch Volleyball versus Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night.

Saturday, October 1

9 a.m. Humboldt Bay Kayak Tour or Guided Community Forest Walk

If you love the great outdoors, Humboldt’s your place. By land or by sea, we’ll help you fit some outside time into your Homecoming schedule with a guided tour of the community forest right near campus OR a kayak tour of Humboldt Bay.

10 a.m. Classes without Quizzes

Get a feel for your student’s day-to-day by sitting in for a lively lecture with some of HSU’s very own professors. Enjoy the learning and don’t sweat the notes—there will NOT be a test.

2 to 4 p.m. Arts Showcase

Humboldt County is known for its thriving art, music and theatre scenes, and here’s your chance to see that creativity flourishing on campus. Take a tour of our art labs, get inspired at our galleries or sneak a peek at the upcoming musical production, Brigadoon.

4 to 6 p.m. Tailgate Party and Food Festival – Then Football

Get ready for the HSU vs. Dixie State kickoff at 6p.m. Join us for some family-style fun. There will be a ton of kid-friendly activities with prizes, food from some of Arcata’s favorite food trucks and appearances by Lucky Logger and the famous Humboldt State Marching Lumberjacks.

8 p.m. Symphonic Band and Jazz Orchestra concert

And if you’re looking for a grand finale to your Homecoming & Family weekend, come to Fulkerson Recital Hall for invigorating symphonies and swinging jazz tunes, all for only $7.

That’s just a small sample of what’s in store for this year’s Homecoming & Family Weekend. We hope you’ll join us.

Overheard on the Network

“We are both excited and melancholy as this will be our 5th, and last, Homecoming Weekend. We don't do all the events every year but have enjoyed several of the football games, attending classes, film previews, lectures and campus tours to the Fire Lab, Fish Hatchery, etc.”
