What HSU Families are Saying
You recently shared your thoughts and feelings on Humboldt State in the 2012 Parent & Family survey. We're happy to report that most of you are having a great experience. It's been fun passing along your many positive comments, and we'll see what we can do about some of those concerns — although building a high speed rail line between Humboldt and Los Angeles is a little beyond our scope.
To conduct the survey, we sent an invitation to everyone on the Parent HSU Network Google Group (formerly the parent listserv) and the HSU Family Network, and received responses from 391 people. Download the full results here (PDF).
Here are some highlights:
Finances topped the list of things students are asking their parents for advice on (23 percent), which was followed by academics and time management (16 percent each).
Most parents (45 percent) communicate with their students 2-3 times per week and about 20 percent communicate daily. Half of parents (52 percent) agree they are “much more involved” with their students college experience compared with how involved their parents had been with them.
Many parents named individual professors, coaches or advisors who made a difference in their student's life. One wrote, “When [our son] met with his advisor at Humboldt he called home very excited about the personal help he got.”
Of the 83 percent of parents who attended the Humboldt Orientation Program, many felt the sessions on housing on “How to Let Go” were helpful.
Parents communicate with their students across a broad range of platforms and technology including phone calls, email, social networking, Skype, text messaging, and instant messaging. Postal mail wasn't listed as a communications method.
When asked for suggested improvements to the college experience many asked for more communications about campus events and deadlines. This month, we've added more info to the “Important Dates” section of the newsletter, so be sure to check there for the latest.
