Top Five Things to do at Humboldt this Summer

Summer’s a great time at Humboldt State. The weather warms up, life slows down and you no longer have to search for a parking spot. If your student’s sticking around campus, here are five ways they can make the most of their summer at HSU.

Catch up on classes

The summer’s a great time for students to complete their general education requirements or get that calculus prerequisite out of the way. In fact, since most students take fewer credits over the summer, they’re more focused and productive. Another benefit of enrolling in summer session is that it gets students that much closer to graduation! From Wildlife to Chemistry, HSU offers a variety of courses (with evening, online and hybrid options too). For more information, visit pine.humboldt.edu.

Outdoor adventure awaits

Was your student too busy to try that standup paddle surfing class last semester? No worries. Center Activities, the on-campus group that offers outdoor adventure programs and activities to students and the public, remains in full swing during the summer. In fact, July and August are probably the best months to backpack the Lost Coast or catch some waves at Moonstone Beach.

Get a job or internship

Downtown Arcata and nearby Eureka and McKinleyville are home to a ton of eateries, bookstores and quirky retail shops. What does that mean for your student? Summer jobs. Don’t be fooled: on-campus services like the Bookstore, the Recreation Center and the College Creek Marketplace also stay open during the summer, meaning more opportunities to find work. The summer’s also a great time to snag a resume-building internship or team up with a professor on research.

Oysters, music, baseball and more

There’s no question that the Arcata Plaza is a never-ending hub of activity. And the summer months are no exception. There’s the continuation of the weekly Farmer’s Market and monthly Arts Arcata, which showcases local art on the Plaza. Don’t forget the Humboldt Crabs baseball team, which plays collegiate wood-bat games May through August. Another popular event is the annual Oyster Festival, which brings thousands of people to the Plaza for music, contests and locally prepared oysters.

Experience what Humboldt has to offer

There’s no denying that Humboldt County is an awe-inspiring place to live and study year-round. And summer is a great time to take advantage of the natural beauty. Redwood National Park, Fern Canyon and Avenue of the Giants are just a few natural wonders worth checking out. For more things to do, visit redwoods.info.
