Families Helping Families

HSU Family feature photo

Summer break offers an opportunity to reconnect with your student, as well as build your connections with the HSU community on campus, online, and in your hometown.

Join students, alumni, staff, and other families at one of four HSU Student Send-offs across California. The picnics are an opportunity to meet people in your area that are part of the Humboldt family. Come learn about other people’s HSU experience, or share your own stories and tips on what families with a new student can expect.

Forever Humboldt Send-offs are free for HSU students, and $10 for non-students. Register online by visiting Forever Humboldt’s events page.

Find a picnic in your area:

  • July 28: Bay Area
Redwood Regional Park (Wayside Picnic Area), Oakland, Noon - 2 p.m.
  • July 29: Sacramento
    William Land Regional Park (Group Areas 8 & 9), Noon - 2 p.m.
  • August 4: Los Angeles Area
    Modjeska Park (Anaheim), Noon - 2 p.m.
  • August 5: San Diego
Mission Bay Park (Crown Point North), Noon - 2 p.m.

Another good way to stay involved with the Humboldt community is through the HSU Family Network. This social site allows you to create a profile, join groups, share information, and ask questions. It’s a popular way to try and find housemates, rideshares, and information about the Humboldt County area that you may not find elsewhere. Families of HSU students are often each other’s best resources

Related to an Alumnus? Earn a Scholarship

Got a Humboldt alumnus in the family? This year four students from Sacramento, Yolo, and Humboldt counties earned scholarships to help their studies.

The Humboldt Alumni Scholarship, funded by alumni donations and Forever Humboldt fundraising activities, is awarded each year to a student relative of an alumni who demonstrates a commitment to academic achievement and financial need. Congratulations to this year’s winners Elijah Otto Cutting, Katelyn Dendas, Kenneth Michael Davis, and Wade Ingersoll, who were awarded $1,000 each.

To learn more about this scholarship and others, visit Forever Humboldt. Apply online through the scholarship database at HSU’s Financial Aid website.

Resource Reminder: Get around town!

HSU students have a wide array of transportation options at their disposal.

The Jack Pass lets students ride all of Humboldt County’s bus lines -- in Arcata, Eureka, and from Willow Creek to Scotia to Trinidad --- at no cost.

Zagster is a cheap and convenient bike rental program that allows students and community members to unlock a bike at one of two stations on campus at a low hourly rate.

Zipcar is a low-cost car rental service with daily or hourly rates and a handy on-campus location.

Zimride connects students traveling locally and beyond, offering students without cars a chance to travel farther, and students with cars to find passengers to lower their costs of traveling. In addition, we offer preferential parking to students who carpool to school.

See more information about all of these programs at Parking & Commuter Services.
