Planning for Graduation
As the spring semester gets underway, it’s time to begin thinking about graduation. Here are some suggestions for students of all ages.
The Spring 2018 commencement ceremony is Saturday, May 12 at Redwood Bowl. Graduating seniors can register to participate in commencement starting mid-January; however they’ll need to take and pass the Graduation Writing Proficiency Exam (GWPE) before they can earn their degree. If they haven’t already, remind them to sign up for one of the scheduled exams by visiting humboldt.edu/gwpe.
If you’re coming to commencement, start planning now. Hotels and other accommodations sell out fast, so book lodging as soon as possible. A comprehensive list of local lodging options can be found here.
HSU’s commencement website also has all the information you’ll need to plan for commencement weekend, including maps, travel details, FAQs and more.
Juniors should be thinking about graduation, too. It’s recommended that students apply for graduation once they’ve reached 60 units -- and at least three semesters prior to their expected graduation date. This allows the Registrar’s Office to do a comprehensive degree check so your student isn’t caught off-guard by a missing unit or requirement. There’s no penalty for changing a graduation date after your student has applied, but failing to register by deadline can be serious.
Even freshmen should be thinking about graduation too. And with HSU’s new online degree planner, they can stay on a path to graduation. Most students should be using the tool already, but reminding them to view the big picture is helpful - and more accessible than ever with the tool. Read more about it here.
